A candidate for the Chairperson position in the Accra West District Football Association (AWDFA) has accused the incumbent District FA chairperson, Farouk Zakari, of registering a 15-year-old player of his club, Abraham Tetteh, and one Solomon Tetteh as player representatives ahead of their much-anticipated elections on Wednesday, 13th December.
The petitioner William Morton argues that the juvenile footballers have not yet attained the legal age to vote in Ghana, and contends that the action goes contrary to Article 2 of the GFA’s regulations on elections. Moreover, the petitioner argues there is no footballer’s association in AWDFA.
LETTER ELECTION PETITION 2023 This is contained in a letter addressed to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Secretary-General on 8th December 2023, William Morton, a candidate for the position of Chairperson among other things said, “The process leading to the elections had been compromised by current AWDFA Chairman, who is also a candidate in the elections has constituted himself as the election committee and compiling delegates lists and voters register.
The petition further accused the current AWDFA Chairperson of, “disenfranchising qualified clubs, and unilaterally abridging the 2023 elections calendar to gain an undue advantage over his opponent in the elections.”
It will be recalled that the GFA recently announced the timelines for the District Football Association Executive Council and District FA Chairpersons.
Per the FA release, a review and vetting of application documents were to take place from 20th November to 30th November while the deadline for the submission of lists of delegates of the District FA Congress to Regional FA’s was 30th November.
According to the FA’s timelines for the elections, the DFAs Executive Council and District FA Chairperson elections are billed to take place on 11th January 2024.
However, the petitioner, contends that it was only after he sent the petition to the FA on 8th December that the incumbent AWDFA chairperson, Farouk Zakari, released the names of delegates to Congress and it was at that moment that he discovered the anomalies.
In this respect, Mr. Morton contends that FA should compel the AWDFA Chairperson not to be in a rush to allow Congress to take place hurriedly and rather go according to its time table.
