Accra Hearts of Oak has denied match fixing allegations levelled against it by a former management member of the club Albert Commey.
Mr. Commey is currently the Deputy CEO of Obuasi Ashgold who interestingly have been demoted to the second division for match fixing and betting by the Disciplinary Committee of the Ghana Football Association.
Commey alleged in a media interview that several matches of convenience were recorded during the recent Ghana Premier League including Hearts of Oak’s surprise 4:1 loss to Real Tamale United on the last day of the league. RTU had recorded only premier league success prior to the result which ensured their stay in the league.
But in a press release on Wednesday Accra Hearts of Oak asked its followers to stay calm amidst the allegations, and rather “asked the GFA to invite Mr. Commey and investigate the truth and take appropriate action.”
“We wish to confirm we never played a match of convenience against RTU (Real Tamale United),” the statement said.
Comney made the claims during an interview on Sunyani based radio station Space FM.
“The 2021/22 League season was competitive. I honestly didn’t like the way and manner the last round of games were played, because there were a lot of fixed matches,” Mr. Commey said on Sunyani -based Space FM, as quoted by Ghanaweb.
He even cited his own Ashgold for their alleged involvement in a match of convenience yet again.
“The matches between Bibiani Gold Stars and Ashgold was a fixed match, Techiman wonders vs Aduana Stars was a Fixed match, King Faisal vs Legon Cities was a fixed match and lastly Hearts vs RTU was also a fixed match.”
“Let us not be hypocrites or else we wouldn’t move forward in Ghana football. I won’t blame the GFA on this, because teams do everything possible to stay in the league during the latter part of the league.”
Meanwhile, the GFA is said to have invited Mr. Commey to substantiate his claims.
