The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has approved the Accra Sports Stadium as venue for the Black Stars 2025 AFCON qualifier against Sudan.
The match, which is expected to serve as a homecoming game for Sudan coach James Akwasi Appiah, is scheduled for Friday, October 11.
There was controversy about the choice of venue after CAF withdrew approval for the Baba Yara Sports Stadium following the poor nature of the pitch in the 1-0 loss to Angola in the opening Group F qualifier.
Ghana were, therefore, requested to find an alternative venue outside the country for the next two home qualifiers.
However, a swift intervention saw the closure for renovation works of all stadia in the country.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports was convinced the Accra Sports Stadium or the University of Ghana Sports Stadium could host CAF games.
Therefore, an inspection team was invited following which the Accra Sports Stadium was approved.
“Following a comprehensive review of the reports of the CAF independent inspection regarding the Cape Coast and Accra Sports Stadia, we are pleased to inform you that the Accra Sports Stadium has been approved to host the AFCON qualifiers for Morocco 2025,” a letter sent by CAF to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) said.
“Specifically, it will host the Group F – Matchday 4 encounter between Ghana and Sudan, which is scheduled for October 11, 2024.”
Ghana currently lie third in the group with only a point, from their last game against Niger.
