SEEDAfrique, Liquid Sports Ghana and Women in Sports Network Ghana would organise a historic first-ever International Day of Sports for Development and Peach (IDSDP) 2022 at the Accra Sports stadium on Wednesday, 6th April 2022.

The celebration will highlight how sport can be used as a powerful tool as an agent for social change and community development, promote human rights and promote sustainable development, according to the organisers.

This comes at a time His Excellency the President of the Republic of Ghana Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo is currently serving as co-chair of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Advocates.

The United Nations has designated every 6th April as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) to recognize the positive role sport and physical activity play in communities and people’s lives across the globe. This year’s global theme of the IDSDP is, “Securing a Sustainable and Peaceful Future for All: The Contribution of Sport.”

The UNESCO country representative to Ghana, Mr. Abdourahamane Diallo, is expected to read a speech by the UNESCO Director General at the occasion. There will also be presentations by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the National Sports Authority, and some scholars at the event.

Former Black Stars defender John Paintsil headlines a list of eminent sports personalities to grace the occasion. The former Fulham FC defender is the founder of the Paintsil Peace Kid Project (PPKP) which seeks to “promote peace by promoting physical, mental and social inclusion and development of children through sports.”

Paintsil will be joined by the former Black Stars duo Godfried Aduobe and Rev. Awuley Quaye Jnr who continue to work closely with youth footballers, and in Christian ministry respectively. As well, author and Presbyterian Minister Rev. Francis J. Botchway is excepted at the event.

Three-time Paralympian and founder of the Go Get Them Wheelchair Racing club Raphael Botyso Nkegbe, will also make an appearance to share his story of surviving the sigma with disability and triumph.

Renowned boxing coach and Olympian Ofori Asare is also set to thrill participants with an exhibition of the ‘sweet science’ profession at the function with some children from his Wisdom Boxing gym.

The organisers would organise a Kid’s Athletics demonstration, a tennis exhibition, among others for some selected basic schools at the function.

Meanwhile, participants at the one day event will be refreshed by Cowbell Milk.
